The Importance Of Entering Competitions
Published date 20 June 2024
In the world of hair and beauty, competitions are more than just winning; they are a vital platform for creativity, up-skilling and professional growth. At Quif, we are excited about our upcoming competition designed to showcase the extraordinary talents of hairdressers using our extensive colour range. But why should hairdressers consider entering such competitions? Let’s explore why you should be entering industry competitions to set yourself apart within the hairdressing world.
Showcase Your Talent
Competitions provide a spotlight for hairdressers to demonstrate their skills and creativity. By entering, you can present your unique talents to an audience that includes industry professionals, potential clients, and fellow artists. It’s an opportunity to gain recognition for your hard work and innovative techniques!
Professional Development
Participating in competitions pushes you to refine your skills and stay updated with the latest trends and techniques. The competitive environment encourages continuous learning and professional growth that can only better your career goals. It allows you to take the challenges you need to step out of your comfort zone and experiment with new ideas that will ultimately enhance your expertise.
Networking Opportunities
Competitions bring together a community of industry professionals. They are a fantastic way to connect with other hairdressers and industry experts. These connections can lead to collaborative opportunities and professional relationships that will grow throughout your career.
Ultimate Exposure
Winning or even just participating in a well-regarded competition can significantly boost your profile which can lead to increased coverage on social media, only drawing more attention to your salon and personal brand. This enhanced exposure can attract new clients and of course, grow your business.
Personal Fulfilment
The accomplishment that comes from creating a finalised look makes it extremely worth entering competitions. Competing can fuel your passion and desire for your work and provide a sense of purpose and motivation! It’s a celebration of your talent that everyone will recognise.
Question Time…
We’ve provided a deep dive into the significance of Quif Centre stage by speaking with some of our key organisers and judges. Here are their thoughts on why entering such competitions is important for hairdressers:
What makes Quif centre stage stand out from any other competition within the industry?
“As Quif Centre Stage is still in its early years, it's a smaller competition compared to the 'big names' such as the BHA's or Most Wanted Awards, acting as a gateway to the world of stage work for up-and-coming artists. It opens a door to a platform for hairdressers to showcase their talent and allows them the opportunity to work alongside so many other like-minded individuals.” Wendy Berry, Event Co-ordinator.
Why do you believe competitions are essential for professional growth in the hair industry?
“For me competition work is not for everyone, it is a different kind of hairdressing where you have to consider very different elements of your work. But what it brings to your development is the constant need to be aware of influences around you, passions, and pushing yourself. In a world where you would be putting your work up against others to be judged is always going to push anyone out of their comfort zones, so we seek perfection, and the growth comes naturally.” Sarah Dickenson, Quif Centre Stage Judge and Alan Howard Educator.
Can you share an example of how a past competition winner has benefited professionally from their participation?
“I can think of many hairdressers that have won competitions that have gone on to do great things. Allowing them to be mentored by some industry greats, assist on photoshoots, work stages at trade shows, and have work published in magazines. There really is nothing stopping someone who wins a competition, they will be given so many opportunities, they just have to grab them when they come.” Sarah Dickenson, Quif Centre Stage Judge and Alan Howard Educator.
What qualities do you look for in a winning entry, and how can these qualities reflect on a hairdresser’s skills and creativity?
“Clear, concise entries that follow the entry criteria always stand out when processing applications! However, it is so important to let your personality, creativity and skillset shine through which is why we give entrants the option of a written or video entry.” Wendy Berry, Event Co-ordinator.
