Get to know the Aussie-inspired Soft Mullet

The soft mullet has made waves in the male haircutting scene, offering a modern and refreshed take on the classic mullet. With its seamless blend, effortless texture, and laid-back Aussie vibe, the soft mullet is the perfect balance between edgy and wearable. The soft mullet keeps the transition between lengths extra smooth, making this cut a perfect option for clients who want a stylish cut without that drastic change. Let’s dive into how you can create the trending soft-mullet cut with your clients…
Before...

Our model began with naturally grown-out hair, providing the perfect base and length to add the mullet shape and structure easily.
Building the Mullet Foundation
Starting with the sides, it’s important to keep these short while maintaining a soft, natural gradient into the longer back layers. Sara Simpson, our Alan Howard Educator, tells us, “To create a structured weight line to build the foundation of the mullet, we’ll use a level 3 guard around the sides before seamlessly blending into a level 2 as you move downward.” It’s key to ensure the hair length transitions smoothly to avoid that harsh contrast between the blends to emphasise the softness of the mullet.
Top Tip: Sara suggests using a heeling technique with your razor to help perfect the shape, and to keep the cut looking refined.
Create a Seamless Blend
When achieving the perfect soft mullet, the blend is what will make or break the cut. Instead of creating a prominent, stark difference between the short sides and longer back, aim for a gradual transition. Sara suggests, “I will always go in with using scissors over the comb to get a greater control over the blend, particularly when layering the back for a softer and more natural effect.”
Top Tip: To refine the edges and keep the cut tidy and trim, use a foil shaver to smooth out any rough transitions to ensure no harsh lines.
Enhance the Texture & Movement
The soft mullet is all about the natural movement and the lived-in texture, so ensuring you teach your clients how to incorporate texture into their everyday hair routine is essential! To achieve the lightweight, effortless finish, add styling products such as texturing salt spray or a matte clay to enhance the relaxed, tousled effect. Sara recommends the Shed Beach Bum Texturising Salt Spray to enhance your client's texture and movement. For clients that have naturally wavy or curly hair, diffusing the top of the hair will also add a subtle curl and volume to the finished look.
How To Style the Soft Mullet

To finish the look, Sara recommends applying a matte styling clay, specifically the Shed Clay Dough Matte Moldable Styling Clay, which adds definition to the finished cut and allows the hair to appear thicker. Sara tells us, “One of my favourites when styling gents is the Shed Clay Dough, which will give the hair a natural hold and keep the hair matte, whilst enhancing its shape and movement. After all, the mullet cut is for those wanting to look effortlessly cool with that undone feel!”
The finished look…
Whilst a daring choice, the soft mullet is perfect for clients who want to experiment with an edgier style and change up their usual look but want to keep their look versatile and low-maintenance at the same time. With its choppy layers, natural movement and smooth blending, this haircut is flattering for a wide range of hair types, so why not have your clients give it a go?
