Elevate Your Social Media Game

Staying relevant and engaging with your audience is the key to salon success, and social media is a powerful tool that can help you connect with clients, showcase your skills, and grow your business. But with so much competition, how do you stand out? This guide, featuring insights from Ben Lifton, the hairdressing industry's top content creator and founder of marketing agency ‘Content Kweens’, will walk you through everything you need to know when elevating your social media presence—from content creation ideas to the best apps and equipment for hairdressers. Let’s dive in.

Content Creation Ideas

  • Before & After Transformations
Show off the results you create! Capture the dramatic changes you make, whether it's a fresh colour, a sleek cut, or a stunning updo, and use this footage to create a visually appealing video reel. Ben recommends not speeding up your footage. "Keep it at regular pace—the
slower you go, the more premium your brand and content looks."
  • Tutorials and How-tos
Educate your followers by sharing quick tips and tricks. Whether it’s a step-by-step guide on achieving the perfect beach waves or maintaining vibrant hair colour, these posts can establish you as an expert in your field. Ben advises, "Always create content out of common questions you get. For example, how often should I wash my hair, how long between colours— all of that is content."
  • Behind-the-Scenes
Give your followers a sneak peek into your day-to-day life as a hairdresser. Share snippets of your salon setup, favourite products, or even a time-lapse video of a busy day at work. This relatable style of content adds a personal touch to your account and builds a stronger connection with your followers!
  • Client Testimonials
Nothing speaks louder than happy clients! Share testimonials or short video clips of clients expressing their satisfaction with your services. This not only builds trust but also encourages new clients to book an appointment.
  • Product Spotlights
Highlight the products you use and recommend. Share why you love them and how they benefit your clients, and you may even land yourself a partnership with your favourite brands for giveaways or discounts.

Tips & Tricks for Success

  • Consistency is Key
Post regularly to keep your audience engaged. Whether it’s once a day or a few times a week, find a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Ben suggests, "Always look to increase your content creation and posting month by month—don't try and do everything from the get-go."
  • Engage with Your Audience
Respond to comments, DMs, and tags always. Engaging with your audience builds relationships and encourages loyalty. Ben emphasises, "Always ask your community what they want to see or learn from you on social media."
  • Utilise Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories are great for sharing quick, engaging content. Use these features to show off your latest work, announce promotions, or give a behind-the-scenes look at your process.
  • Collaborate with Influencers
Partner with influencers to reach a wider audience. Offer them a free service in exchange for a review they can post on their social or for yours!

Must-Have Apps and Equipment

  • Photo & Video Editing Apps
When it comes to editing, Ben is clear: "Capcut—that's all. It's the best, and invest in the premium version." He also recommends always editing on an external app so you can duplicate and re-edit content later. This approach aligns with the idea of creating once and using it often!
  • Equipment
For those just starting, Ben suggests trying ‘Looth’ products for affordable and reliable gear content creation gear. These tools can help you create high-quality content without breaking the bank!
  • Ring Light

Proper lighting is crucial for high-quality photos and videos. A ring light ensures that your work is well-lit and looks professional. Ben suggests investing in a handheld LED light, which is perfect for illuminating your content and ensuring the colour on the screen matches real life.

  • Tripod
A sturdy tripod helps you capture stable, professional-looking videos and photos without the need for a second pair of hands.
  •  Magnetic Neck Mount
Ben recommends this for capturing ‘POV’ content during foils, colouring, cutting, or styling. It allows you to showcase your work from your perspective, giving viewers an immersive experience.
  • Mid-range Microphone

Ben advises, "A microphone priced between £20-£40 is a good investment for talking to the camera." Good audio quality makes your content more professional and engaging.

What are some common mistakes you see that hairdressers should avoid when posting on social media?

“Stop thinking you have to be in your content. It works for some, but not for others. A lot of the creators you see in other content will have brand deals or contracts with brands to promote them - which is why they are always in the content. But that doesn't mean you have to do the same. Understand what value you offer to your client, and what makes you an amazing hairdresser, and create content around that. And please remember that it takes time to grow on social - there's no overnight success.“

Social media is more than just posting pictures—it's about building a brand, engaging with your community, and showcasing your unique skills. With the right content, tools, and strategy, you can elevate your social media presence and attract more clients to your salon. Start implementing these tips today, and watch your online presence transform!
